Michel de Montaigne (1533-92) is one of the great philosophers of the Western tradition and his Essays represent one of its most brilliant achievements. In them, he sought for self-knowledge, and ended up speaking of the human condition, offering a sceptical and deeply invigorating philosophical conception of what makes life what it is – and what makes it worth living. The Essays range over virtually every conceivable topic from the great philosophical themes – good and evil, politics, friendship, death, war – to the details of everyday life, such as the pleasures of food and drink. We shall explore some of the key essays – including discussing Montaigne’s style and manner of writing and thinking – and place them also in the context of his life.
